PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The annual meeting of the above Council was held at the office, Cambridge, yesterday, at noon. Present ; Crs. W. L. C. Williams, D. Murphy, W. P. Chopmull, Jas. Mills, C. W. Br-mskill, A. Heany, and F. Dibble. The three former being re-eleeted, and the four latter being new members. The clerk occupied the chair, and after reporting who had been elected, called upon the couucillois to elect a chairman. —Cr. Brunskill proposed, and Or. Williams seconded, Cr. Chepmell, and there not being any amendment he w.-,s declared duly elected, and took the chair,— The minutes having been read and confirmed, a letter was read from Mr T. Gavin, saying that according to instructions he had handed over the tramway to the Battery Company. His report for the last month’s working was also read, and showed the receipts to be 1137 3s, and the expenditure £3l 12s.—Cr. Murphy said that an impression had got abroad that the tramway had not paid while under Mr Gavin’s management.— The Clerk explained that the balance-sheet did appear as if that was the case, hut the \Battery Company owed the Council £550, which would show a profit of £258 un the year’s transactions. Oamrridge-O.xford Road.— The Clerk read a letter ha had written to the Government calling attention to the present state of the Cauibridge-Oxford road, and asking them to give it their attention, to which no reply had been icceived. Counties Apt.—A circular from the Lake County Council was read, asking the Council to impress upon their representative the necessity of having the Counties Act, ISSIi, amended, so that it should be retrospective.—Received. Thames Harbour Board.— A long letter from Bagnall Bros., Turua, was road re the Thames Harbour Board charging extortionate fees for wharfage mi the Waihou and Pinko rivers.—The Clerk said several had written to the Government on tlie subject, and that the Harbour Board had been called upon to show cause why the Act, giving them an extended boundary, should not be rescinded.—The Chairman said it was absurd for a Harbour Board’s limits to extend 50 or 00 miles up rivers. Advertising. —After a somewhat prolonged discussion, it was decided, upon the motion of Or. Brunskill, seconded by Cr. Mills, that a fair.share of the advertising be given to Mr G. W. Russell, who had ten tiered for it at Is (id pec ii)cl|, Representatives to Hospital Board. —Or.-. Chepmell and Brunskill were appointed the delegates to attend the meetings of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The Council then adjourned for dinner. Advertising. —After the adjournment, Cr. Gould arrived and gave notice that at the next meeting ho would move that the resolution re the advertising be rescinded. Road Deviation.— Mr Maudes, the engineer, submitted a number of plans of Chetwyud’s deviation road at Taotaoroa (by instructions of the Council), in order that the necessary steps could be taken to take the laud under the Public Works Act.— The Clerk was instructed to write to the Government, pointing nut that the road as made has never, to the knowledge of the Comity Council, been proclaimed a road, and that the Council have, the necessary iilans ready for taking the land for the deviation if they (the Government) will take the necessary steps for proclaiming the road. Roads at Waitoa.—'The chairman of the Waitoa Road Board submitted the plans of the mads (imposed to bo closed and also those to he taken in lieu thereof. It was resolved that the resolution u[ the ratepayers of Waitoa be confirmed. Proposed Loan.— Cr. Murphy gave notice that ho would at the next meeting of the council move that a sum of £SOO ho borrowed under “ The (ioverniueiit Loan to Local Hoodies Act, 188(1,” for the purpose of completing the mad from Waiorongomai to the Wairere Stream. Battery Company’s Charges.— Cr. Mill’s drew attention to the charge made by the Battery Company for tl-eui’fiagc of firewood on the tramway. The clerk was instructed to have a copy of the lease and conditions at the next meeting of the Council. Council Meeting.— lt was resolved to hold the meetings of the council in future at the Phoenix Hotel Morrinsville every fourth Friday, at 10.30 a.m. the first meeting to be held on 23rd December next. Bbid’ob' At ShaPtbubury.—M'r Pavltt, the To Aruba engineer, was instructed to get a bridge on the 'Te Aroha-Shaftesbury road repaired at a cost of £O.
Maintenance of Oxford Road.—Cr. Heany gave notice that at the next meeting of the Council he would move that a sum of money be granted for the maintenance of the road from Ojfoytj to the southern boundary of the Piako county.
