\Vi-:u.is*gton. KruHy. Tmk debate wa.s rfsnnu*d this afternoon by Mr Kish, who spoke for about two hours, and had not concluded at the dinner adjournment. His remarks, as inieht h»* expected, were condemnatory of the Government policy. A large number of other members arc anxious to speak before the debate closes, Protectionists on the War Path.
A meeting of the Protectioni-ts members of the Hou-Mi was hold this morning to consider the financial proposals of the I loverumcnt, and especially to decide whether an amendment in the direction of Tariff Revision should be moved. The meeting was attended by 20 membeis, and was presided over by Mr Moss. Resolutions were carried, and a committee was appointed to ascertain the Hre.ntftb of the Protectionists vote in the House. The Midland Railway. The Midland Railway Committee met afcain this mornin#, and the resolution was agreed to, to the effect that the land to be given to the Company must be confined to the authorised urea without any cash liability to make up a deficiency. Sir Julius Vogel, I hear, was strongly opposed to the resolution. Ministerial Measures. The object of the Representation Act Amendment 33111 to he introduced by the Government is to reduce the number of members of the House to 70, ami the Civil Service Amendment Rill will enable policemen to act in certain cases as clerks of the omit. Public Works Statement Mr Mifcchelson intends bringing down his Public Works Statement in a fortnight. The New Loan. Of the new minion loan proposed to be raised, only £500,000 will be available for railway purposes, the balance being required for works other than railways, and for making up the deficiency left by the late Ministry.
Long- Speeches. Mr Peacock gave notice that he would move that the chairman of the committee recommend to the Standing Orders committee to submit to the. House a new standing order providing for the limitation of the time allowed to members addressing the House.
