CAMBRIDGE.

Meeting ok Borough Council.— The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council took place on Tuesday. Present: The Mayor (M.r Gwynnetli), and Crs. Hally, Priestley, J. Webber, Bond and D. Kicliardson. Amongst the correspondence laid on the table was a letter from the Waipa County Council with reference to the proportion of the maintenance of the Waikato Bridge, and one from the Waikato County Council, enclosing account for bill of costs in the action against the Auckland Hospital Board, amounting in all to £7B 18s 3d. Capt. McPherson said that although the Government should have deducted the amount from the Borough subsidy, yet it could make no difference if they paid the Comity direct. The Town Clerk had replied that the Comity having obtained an award given by the Auditor-General, which was for all demands in full, there could be no further claim against the Borough. Cr. Priestly did not think the award covered contingent liabilities. Correspondence was read between the clerk and certain property owners in Victoria-street with reference to the encroachment of their fences. It was pointed out that the live fence at S. Andrew’s corner encrsaclied three feet on the road. Archdeacon Willis wrote in reply that he would lay the matter before the vestry. The Mayor stated he considered it his duty to lake steps to have the law respected, and that if the Council ret used to deal with the case, ho would as a private citizen. Bcvcral councillors objected to the Mayor's action without first obtaining authority from the Council and refused to sanction any course that would involve the council in expensive litigation. It was considered that the fence at St. Andrews was an ornament to the town. The motion that the correspondence be approved of except that relating to the fences was carried unanimously. It was resolved to give Messrs Gillott and Hewitt notice to repair the paths in front of their premises, or they would bo prosecuted. The following accounts were passed for payment;—A. ,1. Forrest, £1) 13s U; T. Well’s, 3s lid ; W. Bartless, £5 8s ; Ryan, £1 3s 4d; H. Buck land, 13s lid. The Council then adjourned.
