LOCHIEL’S VICTORY. [BV TKLEGE.U’IL fIIESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, Tuesday. There was a large attendance at to-day’s races, though the weather was cold and showery. New Zealand Cup, of lOOOsovs. Two miles. Mr. G. G. Stead’s Lochid, fiyrs, by Prince Charlie—Nellie Moore, 7st 121b (Unstable) 1 Mr. D. O’Brien’s Gipsy King, 7st (Moore) 2 Mr G. G. Stead’s Eerosford, (Ist (Cousins) 2 Nelson, Artillery, Torrent, Moana, St. Clair Regina, and Crnchfield also started. Betting : 3 to 1 Lochicl, 1 to 1 Nelson and Gipsy King, 10 to 1 others. A long delay took place at the post in consequence of Gipsy King refusing to follow the horses, hut eventually the Hag dropped to a beautiful start. The colours of Beresfocd and CruehHeld wore the first to show in front, and these were immediately followed by Regina, and St. Clair, Gipsy King and Moana leading the rest, of which Torrent was last. There was no material change as they raced past the stand and round the turn at Gutts’ but nppioaching Porbes’ Moana and Nelson commenced to go up, and Regina lost her position. Passing the kennels Luchiel went up to the leader, but Crnchfield was first into the straight, followed by Berestord, Moana, Gipsy King, Nelson, and Lochiel, in that order. At the distance, Crnchfield and Moana gave way, and Lochiel disposed of Nelson in half a dozen strides, caught Beresford and Gipsy King at the top of the rails, aud finishing very determinedly won all out by three quarters of a length, the same distance separating Gipsy King and Beresford ; Crnchfield fourth, Nelson fifth, Moana sixth, St. Clair seventh, and others of which Artillery was last, following in a straggling order. Time, 3min 3-lsec. Totalisator dividends; Inside (112 tickets), £!l 12s ; outside (LI tickets), K i -Is.
