FOR VALOUR.

The holders of the Victorian Cross at die commencement of lsa7 numbered Joij, ranging, in the army, from the general in command to the private, and in the navy, from the admiral to the ordinary seaman. The L-ndon (iazetia •if the Mh February, IS-in, announced that Her M; l -'y had, under her Royal -Sign Manual of the -sth inst., been pleased io institute a new navy and military decoraiion, entitled the “Victoria Cross,” to he conferred for eonspici' ns bravery. The decoration is a simple affair, being a Maltese cross in bronze with the Royal crest in the centre, and underneath it a scroll bearing the word-, • For valour." It is suspended by a ted ribbon if worn by a sailor. The date of bravery is ins ribed on the centre of threverse, and the name and corps of the recipient are engraved on the bar to which the ribbon is attached. Eveiy private or non-commissioned officer who gains it is entitled to a pension of il<l a year. Every fresh act of bravery epl.il to the first procures him .an additional bar and a further pension of £d. The Utiei’n confers the Cross with her own hands whenever practicable, and there is ■iota man in either service, whatever his rank or position may be, who does not value in the highest degree the right to idd the proud letters V.C to his name.
