WAIKATO HUNT CLUB STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

Thursday last, the date fixed upon by the Waikato Hunt Chili for their Steeplechase Meeting at Gwyimelands, kindly placed at their disposal by Air W. K. Carter, turned out a thorough summer's day. This very condition no doubt accounted for the comparatively small attendance of the public. Farmers and settlers generally were taking advantage of the fine weather in finishing up their late sowings of oats, and in preparing their lands for mangolds and turnip crops, now close at hand. Those, however, who did attend, thoroughly enjoyed the outing, and must have been satisfied with the sport afforded them. The Cambridge Band was in attendance, and played almost continuously during the day'. This at all times is an attraction, and helps to tweak the monotony of the intervals between the different events. Our old friend Garter as usual catered for the public in providing conveyances to and from the course. He still retains his cheery disposition, and looks as fit as ever to handle the ribbons, (fames of chance wore fully represented, but the more legitimate totalizator pretty well paralyses this line of business now-a-days. The machine in use on Thursday is one of local manufacture. having been entirely made by Mr Arnaboldi, of Cambridge, who possesses considerable genius as a mechanic. So far as we could judge, the machine worked splendidly, and gave general satisfaction, especially to those who got on the right horse. We must not forget to mention that the wants of the inner man were thoroughly well provided for at the hands of Mrs White, of rhe Masonic Hotel, Cambridge, there was a first rate spread always ready, and the attendance was all that could bo wished. In referring to the real business of the meeting where the names of Mr Glassferd as Judge, Mr Storey as starter, and Air T. Brown as e'erk of the course, are mentioned it is unnecessary to say that the .several positions were ably filled, and the duties appartaining to each were carried out with satisfaction to the competitors and to the public. Kstero and Sheet Anchor were at starting equal favourites, and until within a short distance fiom home Sheet Anchor appeared to have the race in hand, and, in the opinion of many, would have won if he had been properly ridden out at the finish. Don started slightly the favourite for this race, although many people fancied .Monitor, who started fresh for this race. After several changes of position during the race the Don, when leading at the last fence, but two, came down, but without unseating his rider, Windsor, and although losing much ground by the mishap, and giving place to Nora, who ran a good horse, but came a cropper at the next fence, leaving Monitor in command. Don made up a lot of distance, but was never able to get on terms with Monitor, who won easily, amidst the plaudits of the spectators, the win being very popular. Air Glassford. the rider of Nora, sustained no serious damage by the fall, although from the stand it looked as though Monitor would be on top of him.
