Sir Saul Samuel has had an interview with Mr John Bramstone, Assistant Undersecretary of the Colonial (ffficc, with reference to the mail contracts, and it is pro bable that Mr Raikes, Postmaster-General, will submit fresh proposals. The AgentsGeneral will shortly interview Mr Goschen, Chancellor of the Bxchequer, on the same subject. The death is announced of Mr George Wells, lighthouse engineer. Planters at Demarara intend to abandon the manufacture of crystal sugar, and produce instead dark sugars, intended for the American market. A Russian advance upon Central Asia is regarded as imminent. The rumour has been renewed that the Marquis of Hartington and Lord Randolph Churchill will join the Ministry. October 20. Information has been received from Stanley, dated towards the end of August, and reports himself and party all well. Mr Gladstone, speaking at Leeds, said the outrages committed by the Government were a tearful temptation to the Irish people to retaliate. The Rev. Marshall Lang, pastor of Barony Church, Glasgow, has agreed to replace the Rev. Cameron Lees, Dr four months, as pastor of Scots Church. Melbourne, and will probably leave about the middle of November. The Arawa arrived at Plymouth to-day, with her frozen meat cargo in good condition. &
