HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A si'i-uiAL meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber? hist night. Present: The Mayor and Crs. Salmon, Knox, Tippen, Bell, Von Sturmer, Coates and Jones. His Worship explained that the meeting was for the purpose of considering the report of the Baths Committee. The enlargement would cost about -£4 O. The Council went into committee on the matter, Cr. Tippen said that, the committee could not come to a resolution, as the meeting was not in order, the previous resolution being that the report be submitted to the next ordinary meeting of tha Council. The Mayor said the meeting was quite in order. Cr. Jones thought it would not be right to use more of the ratepayers’ money and make a revenue out of it by charging for the use of the baths. Cr. Coates thought they should not incur any further expense. Or. Salmon said they should economise their expenditure. Cr. Tippen moved, “That no more money Vie expended on the baths for the present.” Cr. Jones seconded. Cr. Coates was resolved to resist any further spending of money. Cr. Knox said they could do nothing until the former resolution was rescinded. The Mayor said the mooting was called at the request of the Baths Committee, in order to save time in settling this question before the season was advanced. Cr. Knox said that although jhe baths had beep a success, he felt there had been a waste of money by the Council. He thought they wore pledged to the outlay of hoo. He believed they had paid too much for the timber. He moved as an amendment, “That the original resolution be adhered to, and that tenders bo called for the enlargement at a cost nut to exceed £4O, ;;nd that the Council arrange with the ulu,.torcas ol the W.('. and S. Co. to drive the piles.”--Cr, fjalifjojj seconded. The amendment was put, aiifj four voted for it and four against. The Mayor gave his casting vote in its favour, and the
amendment was carried. The resolution was 1 lien put and lost. Progress was reported and the Council went out of committee. Crs. Coates, Tippeu, Jones, and Ball then left the chamber, and there being no quorum the meeting was closed.
