The Polling at Hamilton.

During the first portion of the forenoon yesterday nothing unusual appeared to disturb tiie wonted serenity of Hamilton. But as the day proceeded it became evident that the supporters of the rival candidates were working hard for their respective colours. Voters began to come in by degrees on both sides of the river, until towards the afternoon clusters of electors were found in the streets and the effects of the great national duty they were called upon to perforin began to show themselves. Mr D. Maxwell addressed a gathering of Waipa electors opposite the court-house, and though he spoke fluently, bis address appeared to fall flat, which had a had omen about it for his chances. Major .Jackson's committee were very active, and posted up telegrams received from time to time from the out districts reporting the progress of tho contest. It was evident the gallant Major was the winning horse. No mention was made of Messrs’ Teasdale and Campbell; they seemed quite out of the race. Mr Barton's Commercial Hotel was the chief rendezvous of the free and independent,” who argued their throats dry in laying down the law, and discussing the necessities of the country from their individual point of view. Both in Hamilton East and West vehicles were constantly coming and going. On the Waikato side it became manifest that Mr Whyte was currying all before him. After nightfall the excitement became intense. At the upper window of Tin: Waikato Times Office a transparency had been placed in which the numbers, as they came in by telegraph from the outside districts, were exhibited, and greeted with loud acclamations by tile crowd gathered in the street and at Mrs Gwynne’s Hotel. The utmost good order prevailed throughout the day. The numbers for Hamilton were announced by Mr Kirk, the’Returning Officer, at 11.30, and were received with cheers. The following are the returns to hand,

Majority for Jackson ... Ulf .Five returns to come in.
