PUKEKURA DAIRY FACTORY.
A meeting of the suppliers to the above factory was held on Saturday, 13th inst,, in the manager’s house adjoining. The proprietor, Mr Henry Reynolds, gave a brief account of last year’s operations, dwelling especially upon the very serious in jury to the business caused by some of the cows having had turnips, and said that if the factory were to bo carried on this year it must be distinctly understood that neither turnips nor mangolds must be used for fodder. As he intended to pay by pur centage, it lay with themselves whether to use green oats or not, but ho suggested that the Pnkekura fanners try ensilage, and instanced a case in New South Wales where a dairy of 40 cows, fed on ensilage, yielded a larger return than a neighbouring field of 100 cows getting ordinary winter grass. The terms this year would bo on rather a new plan, vix., for milk averaging 10 per cent, 2j'd, adding S per cent, value for milk averaging 12 per cent., and another 5 per cent, for 15 per cent. milk. These terms were considered satisfactory, as it made it to the interest of all to supply the richest milk possible. As some of the suppliers considered that during the spring months the milk might not be quite so good, as later op Air Reynolds consented to take a three months' aver? age. These present were unanimous in promising to use every endeavour for the future success of the factory, and wished to show their appreciation of Mr Reynolds’ enterprise by giving him a complimentary dinner, Air Reynolds, though much pleased at this evidence of good-feeling, asked that it should bo deferred until next year, by which time he hoped the farming interests would have much improved. In conclusion, Mr Reynolds said that he intended living mostly in Cambridge during the summer, and invited the gentlemen present to meet again at the same place in a month’s time, when a paper on ensilage uiight be road and farmjng matters discussed.—(A Correspondent.)
