FREE TRADE AND PROTECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Will you permit mo to make a few remarks on Free Trade aud Protection: What has Free Tradh done for England ? It has driven the farmer off his farm, and has sent England’s best mechanics and best workmen to America, as they could got no work to do ; ;md same of the farmers, who twelve years agu were well to do, are now inmates of the workhouse. And, to come nearer home, I know men in Victoria who aro getting 12s and l-ls per day, i\nd two years ago they were walking qbout in Auckland, aud could get - no, work, and were called loafers for being, mechanics. Those men are now in Victoria buying, beef and mutton, but when in Aupk\aod they were glad to get a boiled' oabbngo. ' So, I may say, if,wo don't get’a little- protection anil railway reform and better represented,.than we have been for'the last nine years, our Jacks and oar Joes will never be able to keep a wife if they should bo lucky enough to gut one.

Mr J. B. Whyte said in his speech at uangmn, that ho had to lot his I arm bocause it would not pay. I dare say many in tho Waikato would like to do the same. But I still believe if wo got a little protection ami railway reform even Mr J, B, 'Whyte might make funning pay.— &c., __ ■_ Farmer o Kaugiriri.
