FURTHER FINDS OF GOLD IN THE PIAKO DISTRICT.
The success which has attended Mr J. B. Smith’s efforts in prospecting for gold at Waitoa has stimulated other settlers in that neighbourhood to make investigations in this direction also. Below will lie found reports of an assay made by Messrs G. Fraser and Sous, Auckland, of a deposit of very considerable extent found on Mr A. W. Gubbins’ property at Papakanui, near Morrinsville : Phicnix Foundry, Stanley-stroet, Auckland, N.Z., July 23rd, 1887. Mr A. W. Gubbins, Papakanui, Morrinsville. Dear Sir,—We herewith give assay of sand sent by you to be tested, viz.
The gold we found to be in a metallic form. The returns being too small for any extensive amalgamation processes. We believe that by a cheap means of washing or concentrating to reduce hulk, which is very commonly done in America with poor stuff, and any materia! that will concentrate to advantage is workable. Your stuff, I believe, is suitable for concentration. It is said that §2 stuff in America has continued to pay dividends. As a practical test, grind a quantity fine, then carefully pan off the quartz, leaving the mineral and mineralised quartz remain. Place this aside, repeat the panning, and when you have sufficient concentrations have the
same assayed, but previous to putting through the finely ground stuff a sample should be taken from it also for assay. The weight of stuff previous to treatment, and also weight of concentrations should be noted. This carefully carried through will present the practical value of what is under treatment.—Yours truly, Grouch Phaskp. i Soss.
