A telegram dated Wellington Thursday siys 'The Post this evening has opened a a masked battery against tbe Premier aud Mr. Ballance, which has occasioned the greate-t surprise. The charge involves an express allegation of ja.litical treachery, which even indifferent [lersuns hesitate to believe. It opens with a statement that “ Facts hive arisen which confirm the idea that a disgraceful intrigue is on foot to sacrifice one member of the Ministry (Sir.l. Vogel), and make him the scapegoat of the sins of the Cabinet Every possible encouragement is given to the candidature of Mr. Felix Maguire. The Native Minister has gone to assist .Mr. Maguire. What are Mr. Maguire's views? He is a devoted admirer of the Ministry bar one. He has unbounded confidence in tbe Premier and the Native Minister, but he would relegate the Colonial Treasurer to the other side of the House—in fact this model candidate, in whose aid the Native Minister i. stumping the country, ojienly professes hostility to that Minister's most able colleague, and would break up the Ministry in order to get Bir -1. Vogel out of it. Surely every dictate of politic.il honour should make every member of the Ministry indignantly refuse such discriminating snppnrt as Mr. Maguire offers them. As honourable men they should repudiate in the most earnest manner such an act of jnlitical treachery as Mr. Maguire wishes them to commit, and evidently believes them capable of
