MR T. CAMPBELL’S CANVASS.

TO THK F.DITOR. Sm,—ln his address at Te Awamutu last night, Mr Campbell clearly showed himself as the friend of small holders of land, for he declared himself in favour of taxing the absentee land-holders. As by far the larger proportion of the electors are men of small holdings, it will be worth our while to consider whether in supporting Mr Campbell wo should not be acting wisely. Mr Campbell is certainly not the friend of the land-shark. Had Sir George Grey been allowed to have his way the land tax would long ago have been imposed, and the country would not have been in its present depressed state. Mr Campbell’s views on retrenchment, state education, and the railway system are perfectly sound. He appears an honest man, with no axe to "rind and no private grievance to air.—\ours, &c.,

Small Holder. Te Awainutu, August sth, 1887.
