FOOTBALL.

Cambridge Town v. Country.

A MATCH between town and country members of the Cambridge Football Club, took place in the Government paddock on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a decisive victory for the country by 8 points to nil. The teams were as follows Country : Messrs N. Hunt (captain), Ryan, Fuller J. Morri.sey, Allright, E. Walker. Drayton, G. McCann, A. Forrest, D. and T. Hannon, H. and J. Graham. Town ; Messrs E. Porter (captain), Webb, H. Wilson, Corcoran, S. Chambers, McKerney, J. Power, S. Richardson, Bmvley, A. Souter, Paltridge, D. Craig and J. Fisher. Mr Win. Ring acted as umpire for both sides and performed tho onerous duties in a satisfactory manner. Several members were off side, and escaped his notice, but we cannot imagine how footballers can expect one umpire to be down on every mistake, especially when the competing teams do not wear any distinguishing badge. The ground was in a most wretched state and was so slippery that it was almost impossible to move, and keep on yonr legs, consequently tho members who usually make good rims were out of it, and the game was a series of “scrums” and falls. Tho country were much too heavy for the town, who nevertheless kept them from scoring during the first spell. In the second, the country obtained four trios, but in each case failed to put the leather over the bar. There was also a disputed try that no doubt would have served to the country if their captain had pressed the matter. Wo refrain from mentioning any names, as we think all deserve commending, the battle being fought in a very determined yet friendly manner. Several claret faces were to be seen, which is not to be wondered at, for it was like playing on ice, but no serious damage was done.
