LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.
[FROM OUR SI’ECIAL CORRESTONDENT. )
Wellington, Monday. The sensation of the time at present is the numerous burglaries which arc committed in the heart of the town in the most barefaced and impudent way, without the police being able to detect the offenders. Almost every day the papers record cases of housebreaking and robbery, and sometimes two or three cases are recorded as among the events of a single night. The police have been much condemned for neglect, but they are not altogether to blame, as there are only twelve constables to supply the night and day services of the city, and they are decidedly overworked. A supplement to the Gazette, issued tonight, contains the names of the registrars of electors and returning officers for all the electoral districts in the colony. Sir Julius and Lady Von Haast returned from London in the Kaikmira yesterday, and left for Christchurch this afternoon.
Harwood, who intimated a few days ago that he would scull Hearno for the championship of New Zealand, has withdrawn from the contest.
