THE WAIKATO POLITICAL REFORM ASSOCIATION.
Owners : To promote economy and efficiency in the administration of tlio Oovernment of the colony. To secure retrenchment and to resist further taxation. To promote the purity of legislation by the reduction of the number of members of the House of Representatives to sixty, and that of the Legislative Council to thirty. To obtain an immediate and thorough reform on the management of onr railways, and with that object in view to urge that the system of management advocated by Mr S. Vailo be accorded a trial. It is intended to submit the following resolutions, to the meeting at Lcfjnesnc’s Hall on Thursday. Rksoixtions : Ist, That with a view to substantial and permanent retrenchment, the salary of the next (Jovemov of New Zealand tie lixed at £SOOO per annum, including all allowances. L’ml. That the ministry will in future Consist of not more than five members, and that their salaries shall he for the I’rcmier £I2OO, other ministers ±jSOO, together with actual reasonable expenses when travelling on public service. That ministerial residences shall be sold and in lion thereof, ministers shall bo allowed a house allowance of £2OO. That the Hincmoa bo sold and, all free passes on railways to ministers ami Members of the Legislature be abolished, provided that the former when travelling on public duty, and the latter when proceeding to, and returning from Wellington, may do so at the pnblit expense. That the honorarium of Legislative councillors be reduced to £IOO, and of members of the House of Representatives to £2OO per annum, 3rd. That the Legislative, Colonial Secretary's, Treasury and Revenue Departments, estimated to cost during the current year £555,353 be reduced ten per cent., thus saving £50,03.3. That the departments of Justice, Mines, Working Railways, and I’nhlic Buildings, estimated to cost £023,003 be re dneed five per cent., saving £-10,150 That the Education vote, £331,500, be reduced to £201,500, saving £130,000. That the Defence vote, £130,201, bo reduced to £.30,201, saving £130,000: and that the vote for Native Affairs, £17,323, be reduced to £3,323, saving £II,OOO. Total savings heroin proposed, £431,035, Itb. With a view to economy, as well as to promote the purity of legislation, this meeting is of opinion that the number of members of the House of Representatives be reduced to 00, and of the Legislative Council to 30. sth. In order that effect may bo given to the prayer of numerous petitions, and to the recommendation of a committee of the House of Representatives, the system of railway management advocated by Mr Samuel Vailo should be accorded a fair and reasonable trial on one or more lines of railway. (itb. That a subscription of one shilling be paid by members of tbe association, and that an executive committee bo appointed, consisting of gentlemen from the various centres in the two electoral districts ; five to form a quorum ; to meet at the Waikato County Council Chambers, Hamilton. 7th. Any other resolutions that may be proposed.
