MR RUSSELL'S "KEEN CONTEST."
TO THE EDITOR. SiK,— Since writing to you last Wednesday I have f.mnd that I was not quite accurate. The total number of votes polled at the election for Fox ton was 1322 (not 1200), out of which Mr Russell secured 227. Yet anyone reading 1 Mr Russell's very flattering notice of himself in his own paper of Wednesday would naturally conclude that he had got within 1(3 of winning, no allusion being made to the winner, Mr Wilson. I have also been informed on reliable authority that he unsuccessfully contested a Westland seat. Will Mr Russell inform us how many votes he polled, how many distinguished men he defeated, and what election wrinkles he picked up on that occasion ? I see in his paper this morning he asks for:; Mr Whyte's record. Now what we want is Mr Russell's record. Surely his well-known modesty will not cause him to withhold it. We now know of two defeats, perhaps there are more; but what we. want, for a change, is a list of his victories. All we know of him so far is that he is a person who is very anxious to get into Parliament,' and who can draw out a plausible programme (which is, however, entirely opposed to that of the Government, whose candidate he is). It is easy to make promises, but surely some guarantee is necessary that he can and will carry them out. I notice also that he admits in his paper this morning with charming impartiality that Mr Whyte has actually got one supporter in Cambridge who is working for him. So far so good. We all know that Mr Russell has one also. Will he tell us who the others are, so that we may know " which side pays the best and go for it bald-headed ?"—Yours truly, Dukk-stbeet. Cambridge, June 17th, 1887.
