A RUSTIC RUFFIAN.
The, jurymen of the Assize Court of the Department of the Haute Loire evidently desire -to emulate the leniency towards criminals which is displayed in po eminent a degree by their brethren in Paris. A few days ago a farmer bearing the rather characteristically rural name .of Sabot lost his wife jnst after she had given birth to twins. He accordingly went to the undertaker's to order a. coffin for his dead spouse* and did so with such an air of cynical exultation that he was turned out of the man's shop in disgust. He then perambulated the village, making love to all the good-looking girls whom be met, and in the evening invited his boon companions to a carouse and a dance in one of the local June. After having enjoyed himself in this fashion all night, he wont home and strangled the twins in the presence of his sister, who had been looking after his house during his absence. This rustic ruffian was only sentenced to twenty years' penal servitude.
