HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

[by telegraph—press association.] WEDNESDAY. The House met at 2.30 p.m. Mr Dargaville brought up a report of the Local Industries Committee. . A long discussion ensued on the motion for printing the report and correspondence brought before the committee. It was at length decided that the report and evidence be printed, but that that the correspondence be referred to the committee for further selection. Sir J. Yogel moved that the resolution be rescinded concerning the custom duties passed by the House on the 10th may last, in order that the money which had been collected as duties should be refunded. Major Atkinson asked whether that resolution would authorise a refund of the money. Sir J. Vogel said he would undertake that the money should be returned. The motion was agreed to. Mr Sutter moved the adjournment of the House in order to euable him to refer to a return which he had moved for in reference to the expenditure on village settlements north of Auckland. Pie said Mr John Lundon had been appointed agent in connection with these settlements, and he strongly denounced the appointment. He wanted to know by whose authority he was appointed, and whether Mr Lundon was a Government officer. He said the whole scheme was a total failure. Mr Fisher said Mr Lundon's appointment was considered a grave scandal in Auckland. He also thought it highly improper that Mr Lundon should address public meetings in Auckland, denouncing a member of the Opposition. Mr Ballance defended Mr Lundon's appointment, and said he received nothing whatever but travelling expenses. Mr Lundon had been instrumental in settling 400 families on land north of Auckland. He had seen nothing in the Auckland papers to bear out Mr Fisher's statement. Mr Hobbs referred to the whole question at great length, and said Mr Ballance had .appointed Mr Lundon as agent in view of the coming election, and to injure his (Mr llobbs') candidature. After further discussion the motion for adjournment was los.t, and the Plouse rose at 5.30 p.m.
