WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL

It would require about £3 or £4.—lt was resolved to carry out the necessary work, on condition that Mr Harris indemnifies the council for any damage done. Native Land Hatks.— The Commissioner of propeity-tax wrote, forwarding a voucher fur £37 0s 'Jd, amount of native rates. Tun Churchill Puxt.— Mγ John Brooks wrote, intimating that the offer of the settlers to pay £o, on position the council gavp a like sum, was made on the advice of Qr, Jqhn'fion. With regard to the £200 guarantee required, the settlers could not see their way to incur such, aa the punt was erected by the Government and intended partially for the opening up of Crown lands. The settlers were, however, willing to become responsible for the first year's cost, viz., £10. He regarded the threat of tho council to lock-up the punt as a joke.—The Chairman said the council had made up their minds not to cro to any expense in the matter. —Cr. Johnson said they might meet the settlers, and allow them to run the pnnt, providing the council were put to. no expense,—The Chairman pointed out that the council were responsible for the punt, and they should have a pfuarantee that it would be kept in good repair. If the Rangiriri ratepayers were satisfied, well and good, but the council must protect themselves,—Cr. Juhnson believed the lock put on the punt had been opened.—The Clerk suggested that the settlers should bo warned against using the punt until tho matter was arranged.—lt was agreed to kepp the punt logked up. j Rqad Nka.ii Mebemeue.—Several settlers vyrote, asking the council to assist them in improving the river road.—The Engineer was instructed to examino and report on tho road, and to expend £ lor £ up to £5. The Auckland Hospital Demands.— The Chairman was in hopes that no special be required to meet these deinancfs. The county was in funds, though Rangiriri would require a loan. TkottiiVG Ovkr Bridges.—Cr. Smith drew attention to the necessity for taking steps to prevent people fro.m going over the UVilwfora and Narrows bridges at other than a walking pace.—lt was decided to do what was necessary, and the engineer wii3 instructed to examine and report on the Narrows bridge.
