MUNIFICENT GIFTS.
The council of South Wales University College, Cardiff, have received a communication from the Marquis of Bute, through Lord Aberdare and Sir W. Lewis, in which the marquis makes an-offer to the college authorities of a site in Cathays-park for the proposed new college. List week Lord Bute presented the town with 100 acres of land valued at £40,000 for a public park, in celebration of the Queen's Jubilee. On Monday at the annual mrv.ting of the Wolverhampton Orphan Asylum, a donation of £5000 to the endowment fund whs announced from a gentleman who desired his name to remain a secret. The whole of the children, 34 in number, nominated for election were accepted without a contest to celebrate the Queen's Jnbilee. The late Rev. John Hyruers, U.D., F. 11.5., rector of Brandesbnrton, East Riding ot Yorkshire, who died recently, has by a holograph will bequeathed all the residue ot his property, subject to the payment of legacies, amounfcing'to about £10,000, to the Mayor and corporation of Hull, wherewith to found and endow a grammar school in the town on the model of the grammar schools at Birmingham and Dnlwich for the training of intelligence in whatever social rank of life it may be found among the vast and varied population of the town and port. The testator has left personal estate which is expected to amount to about £150,000, and real estate of considerable value. The trustees and executors are the Rev. .1. Thomas Grey, vicar of Hibaldstow, Lincolnshire, and Mr Mills, town clerk ot Beverley. The deceased, who wis n Fellow and tutor of St. John's College, Cambridge, was 83 years of age, and unmarried.
