Cambridge v. Huntly.

This match was played on Sydney Square, Hamilton, on the Queen's bir*tliday, and, contrary to general expectation, ended in a drawn game. Before play commenced, the Huntly men, although weakened by the loss of some good men, such as Kensington, and their supporters looked upon the game almost as a certain win for themselves, but Cambridge, although not so strong in the forward division as they usually are, managed by the splendid work of their backs, especially Souter, to hold their own. The Huntly men were captained by MrL. Harris, while MrN. Hunt filled the like position for Cambridge, Messrs E. Pilling and VV. N. Von Stunner acted as umpires for Cambridge and Huutly respectively, and Mr R. Gwynnc filled the position of referee. Huntly having won the toss elected to play with the sun at their backs, and the game was commenced shortly after three o'clock by Newman kicking ofF for Cambridge. A number of scrummages were formed in the centre of the ground, and Harris, by a good run, managed to cross the Cambridge line when he was challenged by Hunt, but in falling he lost the ball which was forced down by the Cambridge side. Shortly after the kick out, Harris again crossed the line but the ball had been called back, it having been thrown forward by one of the Huntly forwards. For seme time now the Cambridge goal was in danger, but the forwards by some good loose play gradually worked the ball b.ick into the centre of the field. After sonu very even play on both sides Ouway secured the ball from a thrown nn l>y one of his own men and crossed the Cambridge line, but the ball w»s called ba.'k. and after several packed scrnmmngMs time was called, Huntly hiving hud th • best of the play during this spell. The second sp°U was opened by Stephenson kicking off for Huntly, and at once the Cambridge forwards ru-h"d thu bail down into the Huntly twenty aud tne latter were compelled to force down, after this Huntly seem to warm up a good deal, and gradually worked the ball down to the Cambridge end where it was kept for the rest of the game. Harris, Ralph, Stephenson and Otway made several good runs but they were all stopped by the Cambridge bacb, among whom Porter, Richardson and Souter especially shone, and time was called, neither side having scored, although all through Huntly had the advantage. For Huntly : Otway, Stephenson, Harris (2) played well, while it is chiefly due to Richardson, Wilson, Souter, and Hunt, that Huntly were kept from scoring. After the above match the Committees of the Hamilton,Huntly, and Cambridge clubs met for the purpose of forming a Waikato Football Association, which was done. The Rules of the Auckland Rugby Union Football Association were adopted. The following officers were elected :— Mr J. B. Whyte., M.H.R., President; Mr E. B. Cox., and Major Wilson, Vice Presidents; Mr P. E. Stevens Hon. Sec, and Mr W. Von Stunner, Hon. Treasurer. The delegates appointed were Messrs. Pilling and Gwynne, Hamilton, Messrs Harris, Huntly ; and Messrs Hunt and Souter, Cambridge. It was decided to join the Auckland Union as a country club, aud the club colours were fixed as navy blue jersey, and white knickerbockers with W.F.A. across the breast of the jersey. The first meeting of delegates is to take place on Saturday next at 2 o'clock in Hamilton.
