THE DEEPS OF THE HEART

There are deeps in the heart where all may edance, If they will as they pass us by ; But too often they judge, by sad mischance, From the surface that meets the eye. There are deeps again where our friends may gaze, Far down in the depths of our hearts ; Their verdict is kinder—more free from haze, — Though viewing those hidden parts. In our soul of souls there are other deeps Where no human eye, save our own, May look, and o'er which the spirit keeps Its vigil, unaided, alone.
