It was insured for £275 in the New Zealand office. The Late Meat Poisoning Oases. Mr Pond, Government Analyst, has reported to Suprintendent Thomson the result of an exhaustive analysis of the stomach of the deceased Maori, Renata, of Mongonui. Mr Pond failed to find any trace of mineral poison or of any alkaloid, and thinks that the probable cause of R,enata's fatal illness arose from putrifaction action of the meat giving rise to septic alkaloic or ptomaine, the symptoms of which are severe vomiting, diarrhoea and prostration.
