MR VAILE AND OUR RAILWAYS.
TO THB. EDITOR. Sim, —This subject has now been so long before the public that even with the prospect of wearying your readers I will presume to throw out a suggestion. As Parliament will not likely agree to sauction a trial of Mr Vaile's scheme without such conditions as will again shelve the matter, I would suggest that the Railway Reform League petition Parliament, asking that Government be empowered to let the Auckland and Te Awamutu railway and its branches to a company for a period of, say, seven vears, at an annual rental of a sum of money equal to the net earnings of the road for the past financial year. After such power has been given to Government, Mr Vaile and his friends take the necessary steps to form a company with the object of leasing the linenamed and giving the scheme a thorough trial.
Of course, there must be conditions such as maintaining the permanent way, rolling stock, and also that the company shall carry passengers and freight at such reduced rates as may be agreed on or less if the company see fit.
As this would give us all an opportunity of giving practical expression to our view, there should be no difficulty in forming a company with the necessary capital to test the matter. —I am, &c, F. C. Germans. Paterangi, April 25th, ISS7.
