APPLES FOR ENGLAND.

We have heard of a small trial shipment of apples having left Waikato to go by the direct steamer ■ Tongariro which leaves Wellington for London on sth May, and should therefore reach her destination about the middle of June. The consignment comprises nine varieties of apples, which have been packed in the usual way, and will be shipped as ordinary cargo, there being no provisions on board for cool storage. The fruit has been carefully selected, but 110 unusual method has been adopted in packing. The cases used are those supplied by Messrs Fawkes and Foxhall, and contain about thirty ponnds of fruit. If it can be proved that apples can be sent Home as ordinary cargo, and anything like a payable price obtained for it in the Home market, Waikato should be able to ship a good many tons of fruit next season. The only unfortunate point about it is that the class of fruit suitable for export would also keep here sufficiently well to provide for our own requirements when the flush of the softer varieties is over, and possibly give as good returns as the net proceeds of the Home shipments, the charges for which will certainly reach three halfpence per pound. As no doubt we shall be supplied with the results, financially and otherwise, of this trial shipment, full particulars will appear in these columns when supplied to us.
