It is understood that the Defence Minister has completed all arrangements for handing over the civil police to the Department of the Minister of Justice. At a meeting of the Opposition to-day Messrs G. F. Richardson and H. Hirst were appointed whips. At the Board of Education, Wellington, the chairman proposed to give the staff of the training college three months notice, and employ the funds relieved by the abolition of the college, in founding an education chair at the proposed Wellington University College. After some discussion, it was decided to let the matter stand over for a month. The chairman commented unfavourably on the work done by the College in the past, and thought it better to abolish the institution, but other members suggested that it would be as well to wait till they saw how the bill to be introduced this session fared. It was stated in town to-day, that the captain of the New Zealand Shipping CornCompany's steamer Orari, died on the voyage home, but if true nothing is known of it, at the company's office here. About fifty shags of a species largei and finer looking than ordinary birds have been obtained on the Sounds, by a gentleman there who intends to send them home where he expects to get £3 or £4 a piece for them, when stuffed and mounted, they present an extremely handsome appearance. The Waitaki has a large hole in her bottom underneath the boilers, and is full of water.
