FIRE AT KIHiKIHI.

(BY TELEG HAITI.— OWX COKRICSPONDKNT.) KiHTKiHi, Monday. A Fniu, which but for timely assistance might have been disastrous, occurred at Kihikihi last night. The stable of Mr Win. Bund's Star Hotel caught fire just as the congregations were leaving church, consequently there was plenty of assistance. The fire began in the. loft in which there were five tons of hay stored. A bucket brigade was quickly got up, and as there was a plentiful supply of water from several tanks, which fortunately were full, the flames were confined to the stable, and so well was the water supply kept up that in spite uf the quantity of hay, not only was the fire confined to the stable, but the walls were not burned, and are still standing. There was no wind at the time. Had there been any it would have been a difficult matter to save the hotel. A row of loose boxes only 12 feet distant, as well as a row of bedrooms about the same distance from the stable, escaped. Had the latter caught there would have been little hope of saving the main buildings, as they run to within a few feet of the kitchen. Assistance was given willingly, and a goo: , . many Sunday suits were more or less damaged in the work. Mr S. Bond got into a iargu open tank when the water was low enough, and passed out the buckets of water, while others drew from the tap, thus keeping up a. constant supply. I do not know what office the stable was insured in.
