LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, MondayA couple of attempts were made yesterday . to burn down a boarding-house in Willisstreet. The police state that the fire may have been caused by vagrants. The police have arrested two lads, Gustave Mayer, 12. and William Sheehan, 13, on whom some property stolen in the recent burglaries was found. They were remanded. Arrived : Barque A. J. Libby (Captairo Richardson) 129 days, from New York. The--passage was uneventful. The trout ova by the Kaikoura was notin as good condition as the salmon. It has; been sent to Masterton. All the papers condemn, in unmeasuredl terms, the defects which have been discovered in the Wainui-Omata water-works. It is beyond doubt that half the water supplied to the dam never has reached town for months past, besides leaks arising from defective concrete and engineering. The valve of the sludge channel at the bottom of the dam fits so badly that large streams run through it. An attempt was made to plug it, but without success, and it can only be put right by emptying the reservoir, which is impossible at present. The most that can be done is to patch up the leads till the old supply from Kairori can be made available, for the higher levels of the town. There is a. good store of water there, which would keep the place going for a considerable time but at present the main buildings: through the hall are not large enough to. furnish a complete supply.
