RAGLAN.
Great regret has been expressed, and much sympathy felt throughout the district for Capt. Steele smd family in the lons of Mr» Steele, who died here on Saturday evening last, and as the remains of the deceased lady were being conveyed to Hamilton for interment, the bell of the Wesleyan Church was tolled, reminding us of the uncertainty of life. On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, sharp thunderstorms passed over the district. The rain which fell was most welcome. A temperance meeting was held at Te Mata on Wednesday night, the 9th. Mr Farris in the chair, who delivered an opening address. The Rev. Mr Stephenson then gave his lecture upon " Drink and its doings," which was of an instructive and entertaining character, highly illustrative of the evil of intemperance. Messrs Logan and G. Moon also gave addresses. Eight persons joined the temperance movement. The school-room in which the'meeting was held, was crowded. Other friends from Raglan, with several ladies, getting wet through, had to return without being able to stay to the meeting.
On Thursday, the 10th inst., a meeting was held in the Wesleyan Church, Raglan, to promote the cause of temperance in the district. The Rev. Mr Stephenson was in the chair, and stated the object of the meeting and requested those present to make suggestions, as to the best means of proceeding with the work. Mr Parris and others then addressed the meeting. Mr Stephenson proposed the formation of committee, which having been done, it was decided that the committee meet once a month. The first public meeting was arranged to be held at Raglan in three weeks time.
Messrs Wylie, McDonald, A. Gilmour, R. Philp and J. H. Phillips were elected members of the Raglan Licensing Committee on Saturday.—(Own Correspondent.) Raglan, February 15th, 1087.
