CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. \T a qmrter-pnst four this morning, a shop and residence in Tuam-street, owned and occupied by Mr Walter Martin, general*storekeeper, was burned lown, uothiim being saved. The building was insured for £300 in the Standard ■ffiee, the stock for £300 in the Guardian, and the furniture for £150 in the South British. .:.n adjoining cottage was badly damaged. It belonged to Mr Geo. Linker, and wa3 insured for £100 in rhe Standard Office. The cause of the fire is net known. Wednesday. At the Supreme Court, Michael Dobeck was found guilty of horse stealing. Sentence was deferred. Win. Hall Zouch, convicted of forgery, sjot two years' imprisonment. Dan Glance, charged with shooting with intent, was acquitted. M\STERT'">N, Tuesday. The farmhouse of Mr Brown Hunt, at Miki Miki, near Masterton, was burnt down yesterday. The owner estimates his loss at £450. The insurances are : £200 in the London and Liverpool O*cf*, and £100 in the South British Office. The., origin is supposed to have been a spark, which itrnited the shingles. G HEY MOUTH, Tuesday. 'ihe skeleton of a whale, between 60 and 70 feet long, and not all uncovered yet, was found in the sandstone rock in sluicing a claim at lied Jacket on the Terrace, about 23 feet above the level of the creek in the locality, and about 100 feet above the level of the sea. The bones aro not fossilised. The sandstone j bottom is soft enough to be worked with ! picks. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Colonial Secretary shortly leaves on an official visit to the South Island. The Minister of Justice returns here on Saturday. Inspector Clifton, in the Marlborough district, wires to the Colonial Secretary that with the exception of a small patch a' Hopefield, sheep scab has been eradicated from his district. It is expected that the whole of the colony will very shortly be declared clean. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. At the Caledonian sports H. Dunn won the championship wrestling, border style, with Powley second. Uowlisou (350 yds) won the three-mile bicycle handicap ; F. Webb (scratch) second. S. R. Steadman (220 yds) won the five-mile bicycle race ; Crow (670 yds) 2nd ; Webb (scratch) 2rd. Wednesday. Maurice Edward Barton and Joha Hunter, convicted of larceny, were sentenced to-day, the former to six mouths and the latter to two year's imprisonment. Ching Ching, convicted of unlawfully wounding another Chinese, was sentenced to six month's imprisonment. This completes the criminal calender.
