PUBLIC MEETING AT CAMBRIDGE WEST.
A meeting of householders of Cambridge Wo^fc was held in the scnoolroom on Monday evening, to consider the action taken for forming a town board for that district. There was a fair attendance of the public, but only about 30 householders, of whom (as near as we could ascertain) 19 were for, and 11 against the proposed change of affairs. The meeting was a very lengthy one, and also rather stormy, personalities bswig freely indulged in. Air Hyatt was voted chairman, and said he hoped none but householders would vote. If any others attempted, they would soon be put down. After a lengthy add res-<, in which he compared the opponents of the measure to children who did not know their own minds, and in which he was frequently interrupted by cries of "order." Up called upon Mr Cad worth to move the first resolution. Mr Cudworth moved '"That it is opinion of the meeting that the county council have done Cambridge West a great injustice in refusing to entertain the petition re the town board, and tru-t they will rectify it fit their n«\t meeting, as the/ promised." This wis ->ec >nded by Mr Potterton, and after a- very warm discussion, in which Messrs Keeley and I). McKinnon were the principal speakers, it was eventually carried, the opposition party not voting. Messrs Owen and Cbitty explained the action they had taken in obtaining .signatures Mr Potterton proposed, and Mr Jarrett .seconded "That this meeting affirms that many of the signatures on the countei -petition were obtained by misrepresentation." The resolution was .also cairied, the oppuMtim again declining to vote. A fuitivjr lesolution passing a vote of ceiwire on the opponents of the scheme \vm uithdiawu bv consent. It i.s a great pity that the inhabitants of C.unbiidsfe VVest sho-ild allow per-onal feeling to enter into then- p.iblic alfnr-., and we trust, that as everything h. is now been done that can forward or ob»ti nut the forming of the proposed town ali-ti ict, th"v will bury the hatchet arH «'<■>' •' ' M round.
