We are pleased to learn that Mr J. J. Barugh irf recovering from his illnesss, and that his medical advisors speak hopefully of the case.
The Government have offered Major Jackson a lieutenant-colonelcy, but the veteran officer has, very naturally, in the light of recent events, declined the honour.
The Matamata Cheese Factorystarted operations on Monday, with a very fair supply of milk. There is every prospect of a successful season.
A meeting of the Cambridge "Borough Council was to have been held on Tuesday, but there not being 1 a quorum it was adjourned until next day.
An adjourned meeting of the Hamilton B'trough Council was held on Tuesday night. It was decided to defer the question of the culvert at Bradley's bridge until after the inspection of the borough to bo made to-day. Several other small matters were attended to. A report of what transpired in regard to the proposed public baths will be found in another column.
The police arrested a man named Harry liorbart at Xgaruawahia yesterday, on a charge of stealing a locket, chain and gold rins?, the property of Mis McCutcheon, of Whatawhat<i. It appears that Herbert who, while working at Fawkes and Foxhall's mill, was living at McCuteheon's camo into Hamilton in their cart. After he had left Mrs McGutcheon missed the articles referred to, and communicated with th'i police, with the result recorded above.
A lady correspondent, writing from C imbrid'j^, says th.it there are a great miny of her sux who an desirous of attending the Christ>nas carnival and frte at Hamilton, and would like to know if it is possible for the railway authorities to run a late train to Cambridge on the three days. By this means they would be enabled to attend the evening entertainments, reaching home abiut 11 o'clock. Doubtless the committee will take this matter into their consideration.
A meeting of the shareholders of the Waikato Cheese and Bacon Factory Company (in liquidation) was held at Mr Parr's store, Victoria-street, Hamilton, yesterday afternoon. Twenty-two shareholders were present, in person or by proxy, and the chair was occupied by Mr S. T. Seddon, chairman of the company. The liquidat >r, C ipfcain McPher-jon, reported that he had disposed of the assets and liabilities of the old company to the Waikato Dairy Company upon s.ich terms as would exonerate the shareholders from paying anything biyond ttte 13th c ill. He read a statement of assets and liabilities, showing an excess of the latter over tht former of £147 4s (id. T'jo solicitor to the company, Mr Hey, read the de^d uf conveyance and assignment, vvh'ch w;is approved. Resolutions were carried adopting the liquidator's statement of assets, and authorising the directors of the old company to sign the deed, and the meeting broke up.
