CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD.
The above board met at Bach's Criterion Hotel, Cambridge, on Saturday at noon. Present : Messrs James Taylor (chairman), J. Fonest, J. P. Thomson, and Picketing. Hefore proceeding with the biKsine*s, Capt. McPherson, as returning officer, formally announced that Mr Pickering had been duly elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Graham. A petition was received, signed by Messrs Ciicket, Ferguson, Crouch and othcis, ,is];in<r to have No. 2 Cross road formpd and gi. welled, coininencing at the junction of the Hamilton and No. 2 roads, and terminating at a laige drain commonly known as Selby's drain. — The Chairman a«kf>d how much the boa id had to theii credit, and was informed £'113 9s 8d. — Mr Forrest suggested they should make a list of all the \\<»rks that wanted doing, and the probable cost of them. If they could not afford to carry then) out in their entirety, they could allot each one its proportionate part. The following li*t was then made out : — No. 2 Cross road, £45 ; Dougherty's road, £20 ; Clarks road, £30: Maungakawa load, {.'10; half-wav road (to HainilronV £10; CalwntV road, £.S ; anl No. 1 Cross road near Mr Selby's, £0. Total, £139 9s Bd. Mr Fom>t thought the estimate for No. 2 cross-mid should be reduced by £10, and and that amount be spent on the Victoria road. This suggestion was adopted, and the works were ordered to be let by tender, with the exception of the half-way road, for wl»ich Mr Pickering was authorised to employ a man, he having volunteered a hor»e and dray, Mr Forrest undertook to prepare specifications, and supervise the work on No. 2 cross, road. The engineer (Mr Handes) offered to supervise the remaining works foi £7. Accepted. A discussion of a oonveisational character took place regarding a tender sent by Mr Crouch at a former meeting of tho board, in which he offered to provide a man, horse and dray for 9s per day. The Clerk said they were now paying lls. Mr Thompson thought their present employe ought to have a chance of tendering. The Clerk was instructed to get tenders from Messrs Wattam and Crouch. The Clerk said since the constitution of the borough it would be necessary to arrive at some understanding as to the proportion to be borne by town and country in the payment of debentures. The amount was £10 as per annum, payable for the next eight years. It rested with the county council, but they would prefer having the opinion of the beard. Mr Forrest moved thai the board, be willing to accept one third of the amount annually tuoin tha borough.— Carried, Tho Engineer reported the main road in very good condition, and thought it would not want repairing for a considerable period. The fence at the Narrows had been repaired, and an extra wire put up for sheep. He also reported a quantity of good kauri planks on hand. The following accounts were passed for paymgnj; : James Hamilton, £UQ jtfs » olerk, £5 ; engineer. £ii 3s ; and 1-. Pehswell, £13 9s. Mr Forrest drew the attention of the board to the fact tjiat Hamilton's account was in excess of tho amount authorised. Tina concluded, tho business.,
