WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The retiring Mayor. Mr A. W. Brown was banqueted by the Councilors tonight. It is understood that the Hon. J. W, Fortescue is on his way to New Zealand to take up the appointment of A.D.C to the Governor, now temporarily held by Captain Medley, R.N. Mr Fortescue is a passenger on board the Rimutaka, so that he may be expected here towards the end of this month. Captain Medley will continue on His Excellency's staff as Hon. A.D.C.
Wednesday. A pawnbroker's assistant was fined £5 for taking articles in pawn from a lad under 14 years of age.
NAPIER, Wednesday. Fred. Hill, a post-office clerk, pleaded guilty yesterday to seven charges of stealing letters, and was brought up for sentence to-day. The Chief Justice treated the first indictment as a first offence, as under the Pxx>bation Act, and the prisoner will be under surveillance for two years. On the other six charges prisoner is to find security in £100 to come up for judgment; when called on. Robert Mitchell, for forging two orders for payment of ten shillings was sen* teuccd to 18 months' imprisonment.
KAIKOURA, Wednesday. Constable S.xiart, of the local police force, met with an accident yesterday while using Auckland made ammunition at rifle practice. The cartridge bursting, blew out the breach, which was twisted considerably, and was projected backwards, striking him over the left eye and partially stunning hun. Several cartridges, on being examined, showed very faulty construction.
NELSON, Tuesday. Mr Price Williams, who was sent from England on behalf of a company which is forming with a capital of £15,000 to inspect the coal lease at Collingwood, expresses himself well satisfied with its appearance. He had some coal removed from the face, and tried in a steamer coming to Nelson, and also on a locomoti\e on the railway, and is well pleased with the result.
TIMARU, Tuesday. The statement that Claridge, who was so frightfully injured yesterday, had died at the Hospital, was wrong. The man is alive, and is doing well in the Hospital. The new Moody wharf was opened for traliie to-day The schooners Sunray and Albert were first taken alongside. The accommodation is now ample for 120-ton vessls at the wharf named.
DUNEDIN, Tuesday. An inquiry into the circumstances of the fire at the goods shed is to be opened on Friday. Some scheelite, from which very good prospects have been obtained, has been found on the Otago peninsula. The City Corporation are claiming rates from the High School Board, but the latter are advised by their solicitor that they are not liable. Ninety-five candidates have entered for the matriculation medal, preliminary and jurior scholarships examination.
INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court this afternoon Edward Jacksou, of Tutarau, farmer, was found guilty of perjury in the R.M. Court at G jre. He was sentenced to two year's hard labour.
Wednesday. At the Supreme Court this morning F. H. Dale, on four charges of stealing poet letters was brought up for sentence. Counsel asked if an application under the Probation Act would be entertained but Judge Williams said it was out of the question, as it would never do to give man license to sin once, because of his previous good character, with comparative impunity Evidence as to previous good character was given by tho Chief Postmaster and others. Dale was sentenced to two years hard labour on each of the charges, the sentences to take effect concurrently.
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Musk Rose has been scratched for all engagements at the C.J.C. meetTHg? Fusilade for all engagements at the Summer meeting, and Tasman, Rubina, and First Lord for the Midsummer Handicap. Wednesday. Last night, Mr Jas. Mills' tailor's shop, Cjlombo-strett, was entered by burglars, and clothing valued at £2o stolen.
