The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

Equ il and exact justice to all men, Ot whosoever state or persuasion, religious or pnlitir.il

THURSDAY, DEC. 2 % 1886.

The newly -constituted Waikato Hospital Board met for the first tim 3 yesterday at Hamilton and elected a chairman. No othei business of importance was set down for discussion, but the members t diced for some time on the subject of 'th i board's position and that of the district in regard to the .Auckland LJo.ird. We have already stated our conviction that Waikato was severed from Auckland and Piako from the Thames on the day the Amendment Act was passed. We base our belief on clause 40, ay hich clearly overrides clause 30, the only other that bears on the question at issue. If any further cvi lencj were required it •would be found in tho fact that the Government tiro of our way of thinking-. They have constituted tho new district of Waikato, appointed days for the election and meeting- of tho board, and, even if they (lumuml it, they could not very v,A\ withdraw from the position they hnvo taken up. Tho board lnvo decided to take legal advice, but for the life of u^ we cannot understand why. It is quite time enough to cry oat when we are hit.

A meeting of those taking part in the forthcoming International Feto and (Jhnstinas Cainnalut Hamilton, m aid of the building fund of S. Last evening between 8 and 9 as Mr Salmon, bootiraker," of Victoiiastre^t, Hamilton, was in the act of putting out on? of the lamps in hi* window, it bv some means or other toppled over and fell nnv>ngst a number of boots, &c, setting thorn on firo. Fortunately Mr Salmon stilled the flames with a piece of carpet, which was close at hand, otherwise the shop would have been in a blaze in a few minutes. As it was the fire was not put out before considerable damage was done to the stock in the window.

The evidence is not all in favour of a deep depression prevailing in New Zealand. At the recent Canterbury race meeting, (remarks a contributor to the Nelson Mad) three publicans paid between them fiGi) a day for the privilege of selling liquoih, and the probability is that they made a good thing out of it. I don't know how much alcohol would have to be dispensed to le^ve a handsome piofit after paying for it and handing over the above sum to the Jockey Club, but it must have been a pretty tidy lot, and it must be remembered that the " privil^e" money ha> to be multiplied by three as the meeting lasted for that number of days. Then during the same period £3i>,000 were passed through the totalisjitor, and to wind up with over £(5000 was handed over to the owners of winning horses. Not m> bad this for one town in the colony that is 111 such a state of depression.
