OHINEMURI NEWS. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAEROA, Tuesday.

Thkuk was a great fight for the chairmanship oi the county at the statutory meeting, Cn*. Cock and Humphreys being the two Richmonds in the field. Cr. Cock the late chairman was however le-elected by a in ijonty of one. It was rather amusing during the progress of the meeting to hear one of the councillors who evidently imagines himself the " Kingmaker" state that he had promised Cr. Humphreys last year, that if he behaved himself he should have the chair this year. This sally wai greeted with a roar of 1; "ghter. Cr. Cook and Nicholls were appoii *ed tiu-lecs and Cr. W.iUh delegate to the Thames Hoapital and Charitable aid boards. The Government have retained the goldfields revenue in payment of the Ohinemuri overdue liability to the above boards. Next to the election of chairman, the Ohinemuri saurian has demanded the week's attention. For two days the entire river population wero out with muskets, rifles, pitchforks, and other implements of war, yearning f«r the blood of this ancient and hsh-like animal. Messrs Gibbon and Brady, of the Junction Saw Mill, were successful in catching the monster, which has turned out to be what is called a *ea leopard. It is neaily Bft. long, and is a formidable looking beast. It was fatally wounded by a gun shot, and only lived a few hours after being caught. Mr Gibbon* offered its carcase to the Thames Library, but haying no funds for the purpose of getting it stuffed, the trustees declined with thanks. The animal is now being exhi bited at the Thames. The local body propose to borrow a sum of ttiOOO to liquidate existing debts and to construct and maintain new and existing roads.
