THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS IN NEW ZEALAND. THE CANTERBURY MATCH. [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Christciidrch, Saturday. The (fame so far has been most interesting, and the result ought to be close, should the rest of the local men make a stand. The chief items of interest to-day were the collapse of the Australians and the plucky play of Blackham and Mcllwraith. Seven wickets were down for 38 when the adjournment was made. On resuming, another wicket fell, and Blackham joined Mcllwraith, having to score GO to save the follow on. The fielding was first-class, and the bowling difficult to play. The tens, however, gradually came until the dreaded follow on was saved. Wilding got rid of the famous wicket-keeper at 99. Blackham played the best game of his side, and his determined play was well applauded by the crowd. Spofforth, the last man, was clean bowled first ball. Canterbury then went in for their second inning:*, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had scored 50 for the loss of seven wicket*.
