WAITETUNA NEWS.

A very successful Gospel temperance meeting was held in the Waitetuna schoolroom on Wednesday evening last. The attendance was larger than on any pre\ ious occasion, many could not obtain seats. Tea ! was kindly given by the Misses Spenco to the school children, who otherwise would and have been prevented from attending. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens for tho occasion by some of the ladies. The Rev. Mr Stephenson occupied the chair. The meeting was opened with the hymn, "Onward Go." Then prayer was offered by Mr Stephenson. The programme was as follows : — Speech by tho chairman ; hymn, Sankey's, 345; recitation, "The Diamond King,' Master R. McDonald. Then a soug was very well sung by Miss Alice Austin. Thi's little girl is only six years of ag*>. Recitation, "Let the Liquor Alone," Master R. Harsant. At this stage the chairman introduced to the meeting, in a neat speech, Mr Red fern, photographer, from Auckland, and called upon thi> gentleman to sniff n amig, "Success to the temperance cause," which he sang in good style. Recitation, "The bonniebit o' blue," Miss Nellie; hymn, " Tell it out ;" recitation, " Bingen on the Rhine," Master G. (Hlrmmr ; speech by Mr Redfern. Then followed a colloquy entitled "The Gossips." This was well rendered by the following Indies :— Miss Wallis, Miss McDonald, Miss Bessie McDonald, Miss L'jna Moon and Miss Y. S pence. Mastei F. Horsey then read ono of Mrs Caudle's lectures in an ablo manner. Som?, "If P.ipa were only ready," Mrs Stephenson. Reading, "Randy Andy," Miss Spence. Song, "Joe Perkins," Mr Chas. Moon. Reading, one of " Mrs Caudle's lectures," Miss McDonald. Song, " Little Mary," Miss Ethel Austin. Recitation, "The Origin of Scandal," Miss Lena Moon. Hymn, "Who is a Brave Man." Recitation, " 1 >iv> Your Roll in Your Own Pot at Home," Mr Redfern. Duet, "Yield not to Temptation," the Mis*es Robertson. Hpeech.MrStephenson. Hymn. " Welcome, Wanderer." At this part Mr Stephenson invited all those that had not already signed the pledge to oome forward and do so. He said they had filled one book, and wished to commence another that night. Siv accepted tho invitation, and donned the blue ribbon. Tho readings by Miss Spence and Miss McDonald were very well rendered ; also the recitation by Mr Redfern, M ins Wallis presided at the harmonium. At the close of the meeting, Mr Stephenson moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Rodforu and all those who contributed to the success of the mooting, which was can ied by acclamation, Mr itj. Moon then moved a hearty \ote of thanks to the chairman. This was also carried by acclamation. The Benediction being piononnced by the Rev. Mr Stophenson, the meeting terminated. The Rev. R. G. Bolcr, Anglican clergyman, conducted divine service here on Sunday, 31st ultimo. There was a good congregation. The rev. gentleman also had good congregations at Ruapuke, Te Mata, and Raglan. The frost of tha 12th inst. has dono a good deal of damage here to tho vegetables and fruit trees. A large number of the gooseberries are shrivelled up and falling off.
