CRICKET.

Paterangi C.C. v. Hamilton C.C.

This, the first match of the cricket season in Waikato was played on Sydney Square, Hamilton, on Satuiday and won by the local team by 3(5 runs. Cionke^, winning the toss, elected to put Hamilton in at 1 1 o'clock. Ste\ ens and Sage tii>t faced the bowling of Burdekin and Crookes. Two wickets were dou n for S but Stevens and Bygrave raised the total to 3G before the third fell, a score which was jns>t doubled by the remaining batsmen. Paterangi started just befoie lunch but failed to make more than 32, Crookes having top score with 9. In the second innings of the locals, eight wickets were down for 27, Stevens 12 and Cox 10, but the last two brought the score to the comparatively respectable total of 48. Paterangi's second venture realised 52, McFarlane contributing 12 in excellent style ; he was un fortunate in the first innings, being badly run out when looking set, or the result of the match might have been different. Mo«( of the visitors have been strangers to cricket for a considerable time, and deserve every credit for their play. Stevens and Dockery shared the bulk of the wickets foi Hamilton, the former being p.utieularh destructive, having obtained 11 wickets fo'i 30 runs, including a wide. Itadfoid and Itichdale kept wicket well for their respective sides, and McFarlane, Bygravp, amJ Germann made some excellent catches. We were glad to .see the veteran N. R. Cox on the war path again after three years' fast, showing by his batting and Holding that he is still all there. Mr Townsend, the able umpire of la<-t seas-m, was also on the ground, to the great satisfaction of hinumerous friends, who have so sincerely regretted his proti acted illness.
