THE MELBOURNE CUP

Th great race for the " Cup" takoa place this afternoon at Flemington, and it is almost, needless to say that the attendanco will be larnre. Tiident has been backed heavily to win, but after his performance in the Derby on Saturday, although ho scored a win, he is sure to fall back in the betting. From the accounts to hand it seems that Hales had all his work to keep the favourite going, and nt one time during the race it seemed as if he had collapsed. However, he managed to catch the jndge'3 eye, and thin add another laurel to the Hon. J. White's stables. Should Trident do the "double," it will be a death-blow to the ring, as they woro heavily hit on Saturday. Thirty-nine have accepted for the Clip, but them will be a thinning out before they face the starter, and it seems probable that tne number will not exceed twenty-eight or thirty at the fall of the flag. Trenton has been backed to win for a pit of money, and as Musket's progeny has achieved great things before, the same may be expected again. Nothing would give Now Zoalandcrs greater pleasure this evening than hearing that Tronton had pulled off the Cup. For some years past the Melbourne Cud has almost invariably been won by horses little dreamt of in the betting, but tins year there are such a lot of Al candidates that it will bo a hard task to pick on** who will be able to live to the end of the race. This year the Cup will be one of greater interest than heretofore, the Victorian Racing Club having given 2000io\\s. with the sweepstake added, whilst the second horse receives £500, and the third £300. The Hon. J. White has an excellent representative in Hexham, and it is said that he ran a mile and three-quarters in 3mins. 16sec:i., which should make his Cup prospects look cheering. In the Caulfield Cup Ben Bolt's performance should entitle him to be placed amongst the likely ones. Another of which great expectation may bo looked for is Isonomy, and I should not at all be surprised to tind him amongst the first three. For the outside division Lord William is greatly fancied. The most likely ones to u<y fancy, from which to furniih the winner are Little John, Trident, Trenton, Isonomy, Ben Bolt, Lud William, Britisher, Cyclops and Hexharn, and to select from the crowd I must gho my prefeience for ISONOMY, TRENTON, or LITTLE JOHN.
