THE HANGING CASE AT WELLINGTON. BURROWS EXPLAINS. (BY TELEGRAPH.) Wellington, Saturday.

Saturday. Burrows, who was censured at the coroner's inquest ye^teiday for not cutting down the man Elvin, who had committed suicide by hanging, wiites to the Evening Post that immediately ho saw El\in he letmned for a knife, but before getting back the body had been taken down by the witness Raven. He continues: —" I got a pillow and placed it under the deceased's shouldeis, while Dr. Cole endeavoured to restoie respiration, but without avail, the doctor stating that Elvin must have been dead foi an hour at least. Now, .sir, the doctor mu^t have been on the spot in 15 minutes after I first saw the body hanging, so that life must ha\e been extinct three quarters ot an hour before I was called, which entirely disposes of Mrs Elvin's exaggerated statement, that her husband w,^ kicking after I came down. I may he re state that Mrs Elvin's statement is erroneous from beginning to end." He concludes by asserting that a prior engogement prevented him from attending the inquest.
