EXTRAORDINARY CONDUCT. [BY TELEGRAPH— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday.
At the inquest on t>e body ( f William Elvin, a in. in who committed suicide by hanging yesterday, ivile'ice was given that a nun named Bimovvs, who was lodgng ;it Elvin's, saw him (Elvui) immediately after hanging him-elf, but refused t<> cut him down until the police anived. Mrs Elvin said *he called 13m rows, who went into the shed, aid after a Ion? absence letuined and baid "It's a case of pickles ; Billy's done away with himself. He has handed himself." Witness*, asked him to cut her husband down, but he would not, saying he dare not touch him until the police saw him. Burrow* then went away. Witness went out and s.uv hpr husband kicking, and went for Mr Iliven, who cut the body down. It was about three-qiui teis of an hour after she told Burrows to cut the body down till Mr Raven came and cut the rope. Had the body been cut down when first seen, it i* probable the man would have lived. The Coroner said: "This is the most dreadful thing I ever heard of, and it is mo.st extraordinary that people will go on in that stupid way of seeing their fellows in a position of danger, and not attempt to save them till the police are >-ent for." The jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity, and passed a vote of censure upon Burrows.
