THE LATEST. The Charge Against W. H. Jones. [BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Te Aroha, Friday.
W. H. Jones, who \v.\s remanded a week ago on a charge of uttering a forced cheque for £}') Gs on the Bank of New Zealand, Hamilton, purporting to have been signed by L. A. McCaskill, of Hikutaia, was brought up before Mr Stratford in the R.M. Court to-d.iy. Two other charges arising out of the same offence were also laid against the accused, viz., fraudulently obtaining goods by means of a valueless cheque and forgery. The evidence was voluminous, and the hearing occupied the greater part of the day. Accused said be had been driuking heavily and had no recollection of filling up or passing the cheque. He was committed for trial on each of the three charges at the January sittings of the Supreme Court in Auckland. Bail will be allowed on his own recognisnees for £100 and two securities of £50 each.
Meeting of Creditors. The mneting of creditors to-day in the estate of E. Cookson, miner, Waiorongomai, adjourned from yesterday, again lapsed for want of a quorum.
