POLICE COURT, CAMBRIDGE. Friday, Bth October.— (Before Major Wilson, J.P.)
JosErH Smith alias Jackson, was charged with being drunk in Cambridge on Thursday. Constable White deposed to his arresting the prisoner, wty) was lying down in Victoria-street in the daytime in a drunk and incapable condition. The prisoner, in answer to the court, said that he was a coach builder by trade, and was travelling through the district looking for work. He intended learing the town at once. On this condition he was discharged with a caution. Daniel Gallagher was charged with being found in an unoccupied house without lawful excuse. Constable White deposed to his arresting the prisoner and another man in the old bakehouse in Brewerystreet late on the previous night. Both men were under the influence of liquor, and had been drinking about the town for the laßt day or so. Prisoner had been arrested for drunkenness on Tuesday, and was discharged with a caution the next morning on promising to go at once to his work. The bench said that the public mmt be protected. It was a very dangerous thing for drunken men to sleep in unoccupied premises, as a disastrous fire might be caused by such means. He would have to sentence the prisoner to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. James Murphy was also charged with the same offence as the last prisoner, in whose company he wai anested. The prisoner pleaded hard to be let off, as he intended leaving the place, and was only waiting until his mate, Jackson, should be released to clear out of the town. The court said it could not distinguish between him and the last prisoner, and must inflict the same penalty on each of them. Sentenced accordingly to one month'i imprisonment with hard labour.
