THE OLD WAIKATO TURF CLUB. Proposed Sports Meeting at Te Awamutu.
(by telegraph.) Te Awamutu, Wednesday. The committee in connection with the sports committee met last night, when the date of the meeting was fixed for Wednesday, the 3rd November, the third day of the cavalry drill. The object of the meeting ia to wipe off the liabilities of the Waikato Turf Club. Iso programme was arranged, as it was thought beat to let the matter stand over till the next meeting of the committee, which will be held at Ohaupo next Tuesday, at 10.30 a.m. In the interval the members representing each district are desired to meet and make up programmes to be presented at the meeting, when that which recomends itself as the most suitable will be adopted, or, failing that, one could be adopted or made up from those presented. The bill »f course will include horse rases as well a toot sports. but it is not deemed advisable to have m<>re than four of the former. As regard", the latter no limit of number w.is ti\ed. A great deal of interest has been manifested in the subject by the public, subscriptions having been freely given, some ot toetu amoun ing to £10. One gentleman gave twenty prime sheep as his donation ; Mr Millars, <if Ohauuo, gives a thousand feet of timber, and Messrs Coulthard and Graham also give a like quantity. Tue timber will be very acceptable for building purposes. Much interest i.s taken, and the meeting bids fair to be the most successful held here for some time. The sports will be held on the Waipa Racing Club's course here. A strong body of stewards was appointed, including gentlemen from all parts of the Waikato and some from Auckland. The other officeus were also appointed. The proceedings will wind up with a ball in the Volunteer Hall in the evening, for which a committee was appointed, tickets to be 5s each for gentlemen, ladies free. The cavalry band will play on the com so during the day and for the ball in the evening.
