HOUSE PARADE AT OHAUPO.

|fuom ouk own couuksponoent.] The annual parade of Bires which was held at Ohaupo on Tuesday w*s n«t a success io point of numbers, only nine horses being entered, viz., two ithoroughbreda, two roadsters, and five draughts. The following are the entries : — Thoroughbreds : Stud Company's Ingomar, and Mr Weston's Both well. Roadsters: Mr Hill's Young Stonewall Jackson, and Messrs VV. (irice and Co.'d Merryman. Clydesdales :• Mr Carter's Bonnie Prince, Stud Company's Elgin, Mr Hill's Lowden Tain and Wince Charlie, and Mr Pattersons Te Kooti. The show in thoroughbreds was practically weak this year, instead of four or five we have only two. Bo^h however are new arrivals, Ingomar ' in my opinion being the better horse of the two. In this horse the company have a fitting successor to Anteroß. Both well's appearance is also good, his condition being simply perfect, and with suitable mares 1 there can be no doubt of his getting .good useful horses. His owner put him over a bar about 3ft. Din. high, the horse taking his jumps very cleverly indeed. Ingomar did not care about the jumps, There was no need, however, to, show what he could do over a fence, his performances in that direction are already well known. He is as active as a kitten, and shows plenty of quality, but, like most of the thoroughbreds we have had, would be the better of more bone. The question is often asked — "Why do we not breed a better class of horse?" The answer is plain enough, we want sires with more substance than -we have had hitherto, the whole of the blame must not be cast upon the jnares. No doubt many weedy brutes which never go to the stud are bred from, and the result is dissappointrnentand a class of weedy scrubbers not worth the glass they eat. There are nevertheless a good many mares which, if mated with a good sire with plenty of bone as well as breeding, would produce good and valuable stock. In point of bone Randwick was the most suitable of the class we have had. What is wanted, however, is a horse something after the style of old Musket, with substance enough almost to tak* the side of a plousrh, but of course his figure was too high for anything but racing stock. For breeding the class of horses referred to, Young Stonewall Jackson was the most statable hor.-e on the ground ; he has plenty of b >ne, stands about 10 hands high, and is well and compactly built. Merryman, anothai roadster, is a httle model, rather on the small side, but as he is not quite three years old yet he has plenty of time before him to mend of that defect by the time he is five. If well cared for in the meantime, he will turu out a really good horse, ami if decently bred mares with a, fair amount of bone and substance are -put to him will lam sure get good stock. Both these horsprt should have good seasons, and if the lighter class of mares possessing blood and a fair amount of bone are seiitto them I do not think their offspring will be anything to be ashamed of. The dams will furnish the blood and the siros the bone. The Clydesdales t fancy in the order named, viz., B.mnie Priuce, Elgin, and Lowden Turn. I saw a two yoarold in a fanner's p.vddock sired by thelattpr that would boa credit to any hor^o. Elgin h without duuht a grand horse and has good action, but Bonnie Piince is a better topped hor.se, though he miy be, as some >.iy, smaller in the bone. It i& a pity Rantin Rohm was not shown. He is well worthy a place on the show ground, some of the best and staunchest workers round hete claim him as their sire. After the parade some very pretty jumping was done by Bothwell and Merryman, who, by the way, ip by old Merrylegs out of a thoroughbred mare, and I am told that in the matter of jumping Young Stonewall Jackson is able to take his fences in good style. On the whole as regards quality we are well enough olf in the matter of sires for this year.
