MR BARUGH'S GRIEVANCE. Mr Barugh in Reply.

TO THK EDirOK. Sin,— When I bought Wartlo from Mr Ls«>lio I win quite ignorant of any claim Mr Charles Ewen might mako for crossing 1 a few feet of, to him, worthies'' ground. The first intimation I had of the claim was on the day of Mr Leslie's "sale. On that day M> Charles Kwun brought a document]; which I understood was to bind me, by my signature, to pay either fc."H) or £2 per annum for fifty yeans. If I misunderstood Mr Charles Ewen I beg his pardon ; but Mr Ewen knows \ cry well that he had a document in his pocket binding me to something of that description. I saw the outside but refused either to oprn it, read it, or sign it, and expressed myself in no very complimentary terms on what I considered to be an unjustifiable piece of extortion. Mr Ewen, however, gave mo to understand that he thought he was master of the situation and, notwithstanding my indignation, would enforce the t!2 per annum. After this controversy I certainly considered it useless to apply to Mr Chas. Ewen for any relief in the matter. A.s for Mr Ewen's statement th.it he nover demanded £.")0 or £2 per annum for fifty years, I certainly have had strong grounds for the truth of my impression. Last harvest my .son reaped some wheat for Mr B. Ewen, and Mr Chas. Ewen stopped £'G out of the myment for reiping as three years' rental for crossing this worthless piece of ground. That was certainly painful confirmation of my belief. I may state that for some yenrs 1 considered that I was the helpless victim of an irremediable wiong. It was only lately I discovered that the laws of New Zealand provide a remedy for abuses of this description, and it is only in accordance with the spirit and lottor of them* laws that this mn^dy should bo applied (where these abuses exist. — Yor.is lespoctfnllv, JOS.
