CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above board was held at Hewitt's Hotel, Cambridge, on Saturday. Present : Messrs Taylor (chairman), j. J. Smith, S. S. Graham, and Forrest. A letter was read from the Government, saying that the sum of £42 10s lid had lodged to the credit of the board. The Clerk read a letter he had written to the chairman re the dispute between Messrs B.irugh and Ewen. The Clerk reported he had summoned the gentleman named, and they were in attendance. Mr Graham thought the disputants should settle the matter themselves. Mr Forrest thought the board should intervene. Mr Smith agreed with Mr Graham. Ultimately it was agreed that as the disputants were in attendance they should state their case. Messrs Barugh and Ewen were then called and explained the case, which is briefly this. The right of way to Mr Barugh's property was over Mr Ewen's land, and was 27 perches in extent ; for this i Mr Ewen demanded the sum of £50 cash, or £2 a year for 50 years. Mr Barugh therefore prayed that the board take the i land for a public road. The Engineer read the advertisement he intended to insert, and explained that the matter did not altogether come under the jurisdiction of the board, but of that of the county council. It was decided to insert the advertisement, and the matter thus ended. The Clerk said he had written to the engineer, relative to his demand for £5 5s more. As Mr Sandes was in attendance, .he would explain the demand. Mr Forrest said he did not think Mr Sandes was entitled to more than the agreement of 1883 specified. The Engineer said, if allowed, he would make an explanation. On being allowed to do so, he said he had done what he had agreed to do, but had since found the plans were not full enough for Government inspection. It was agreed to allow the plans to go as they were. The Engineer read a letter he had sent to Freeman, ordering some posts, also one from Mr Penuell, the contractor, .saying the posts were not fit for the purpose intended, and refusing to use them. The Engineer had examined the posts, and reported the s,ime as the contractor. The Engineer reported the gra\cl contractor was not doing his work. Mr Smith said he thought the man was better off the roads at this season. The Engineer presented his accomit for £1 11s 0d which was passed. Other accounts were passed amounting in all to £22 7s 6d.

After the formal meeting, a long and interesting discussion took place relative to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Act. Several members were of the opinion that the board ought to pass a motion informing the county council that they sided with them in urote-ting against the subsidy to the Auckland Hospital being paid. Several acts of Parliament were quoted, and as the outcome Mr Fonest gave notice that at the next meeting ho would move as above. The meeting then adjourned.
